From Pipe to Fitting
A chrome moly buttweld fitting
starts life as a section of seamless or welded pipe, often produced from forged
billets. The pipe is cut to length, then formed into the required shape —
elbow, tee, reducer, cap — through one of several processes, each with
implications for grain structure and downstream heat treatment.
Hot Forming: The Standard for Critical Service
Hot forming heats the pipe to
about 950–1050°C and pushes it through a die or over a mandrel. The high
temperature keeps the steel ductile, allowing the desired shape to form without
internal cracking, and produces a uniform grain structure throughout the
fitting body.
For chrome moly grades, hot
forming is generally preferred over cold forming because cold work introduces
residual stresses that the subsequent heat treatment must remove.
Heat Treatment: Where Grades Are Made or Broken
After forming, the fitting is
heat-treated to develop the metallurgy specified by the grade. WP11 and WP22
are typically normalized and tempered. WP91 requires normalizing followed by
tempering in a tightly controlled window — usually 750–780°C — to achieve the
right balance of strength and ductility.
Calibrated furnaces, traceable
temperature charts, and quench-rate control are non-negotiable. A serious
manufacturer keeps complete heat-treatment records that link to each fitting's
heat number.
Machining and Bevelling
The fitting is then machined to
final dimensions, with weld bevels prepared per ASME B16.9 or the project
specification. Beveling tolerance, root face dimension, and external surface
finish all affect the field welder's first-pass success rate.
Inspection and Test
Standard inspection sequence:
visual and dimensional check, surface examination by magnetic particle or dye
penetrant, volumetric examination by ultrasonic on critical sections, hardness
testing post-heat-treatment, and PMI to confirm chemistry. Mechanical testing —
tensile, impact, hardness — is performed on test pieces from the same heat lot.
EN 10204 3.1 certification is
standard; 3.2 adds an independent third-party witness to the testing — required
for nuclear-adjacent and most large EPC contracts.
Marking, Packing, and Traceability
Each fitting is hard-stamped
with: heat number, grade, size, manufacturer mark, and standard reference.
Packing is shape-optimized — elbows nest in crates, large bends ship
individually crated. The mill test certificate ties everything back to the heat
number; in 25 years, that traceability is what enables an owner to root-cause a
failure or defend a warranty claim.
In Practice
Manufacturing discipline is invisible to the buyer until the fitting fails or the audit lands.
