Inconel 625 vs Hastelloy C276 vs Monel 400: A Practical Comparison for Pipe Fittings

Three Alloys, Three Different Strengths

Inconel 625, Hastelloy C-276, and Monel 400 all sit in the nickel alloy premium tier, but they were each engineered for different threats. Project teams who lump them together often over specify in one direction or underspecify in the other. A clean side-by-side helps the decision.

Inconel 625

Chemistry: Ni-Cr-Mo with niobium addition (roughly 58Ni-22Cr-9Mo-3.5Nb).

Strengths: outstanding combination of strength and corrosion resistance, excellent weldability, good service from cryogenic to ~980°C, resistant to chloride pitting and stress corrosion cracking.

Best fit: offshore piping, chemical reactors, marine service, exhaust systems in aerospace and power, and any service where a single alloy needs to handle a mix of threats. Often the default if no single threat clearly dominates.

Hastelloy C-276

Chemistry: Ni-Mo-Cr with tungsten (roughly 57Ni-16Mo-16Cr-4W).

Strengths: best-in-class resistance to mixed acids, oxidizing-and-reducing environments, chloride-bearing systems, and pitting/crevice attack. Withstands wet chlorine and chlorinated organics that would destroy Inconel 625.

Best fit: pulp and paper bleaching, flue gas desulfurization, chemical reactors handling mixed acids, pharmaceutical and specialty chemical service. The default when corrosion chemistry is the dominant threat.

Monel 400

Chemistry: Ni-Cu (roughly 67Ni-30Cu).

Strengths: outstanding resistance to seawater, hydrofluoric acid, and concentrated caustic alkali. Reliable in reducing environments. Good thermal and electrical conductivity.

Best fit: marine and offshore piping (especially seawater and brine), HF alkylation in refineries, caustic concentration in chlor-alkali plants, and certain high-purity chemical service.

Cost and Lead Time

On a fittings basis: Monel 400 is typically the most affordable of the three, Inconel 625 sits in the middle, and Hastelloy C-276 is the most expensive. Lead times follow a similar order — Monel and Inconel 625 are widely stocked; C-276 sometimes requires longer manufacturing runs.

Weldability and Field Practice

All three weld with matching nickel-base filler metals. Inconel 625 is the most forgiving in the field. Hastelloy C-276 requires careful interpass temperature control to avoid sensitization. Monel needs surface cleanliness — copper contamination from surrounding tools or grinding wheels can cause cracking. Field crews working with any of the three benefit from material-specific WPS qualification rather than a generic 'nickel alloy' procedure.

How to Choose

Single-threat seawater or HF service — Monel. Aggressive mixed acids and chlorides — Hastelloy C-276. Mixed threats, including high temperature, where one alloy needs to handle the variety — Inconel 625. When in doubt, share the actual stream composition with your manufacturer and ask which of the three would they recommend, and why.

In Practice

Choosing among Inconel 625, Hastelloy C-276, and Monel 400 is a decision that pays off across the asset's life.
