What EN 10253-2 Covers
EN 10253-2 is Part 2 of the EN 10253 series of European standards for butt-welding pipe fittings. It specifies the technical delivery requirements for seamless and welded elbows, tees, reducers, and caps made of carbon and alloy steel, manufactured for pressure applications at room temperature, low temperature, and elevated temperature, and used in the transmission and distribution of fluids and gases. The standard covers chemical composition, mechanical properties, dimensions and tolerances, inspection and testing requirements, marking, and packaging.
Type A vs Type B: The Core Difference
Type A — Butt-welding fittings with a reduced pressure factor. The wall thickness at the welded ends and across the body of the fitting matches that of a straight pipe of the same nominal thickness. Because of this, a Type A fitting's resistance to internal pressure is generally lower than a straight pipe of identical dimensions.
Type B — Butt-welding fittings rated for full-service pressure. The body of the fitting is manufactured with increased wall thickness so that it can withstand the same internal pressure as a straight pipe of the same dimensions. Any excess thickness at the welding ends is machined down to match the connecting pipe.
In short: Type B is the version to specify wherever the piping system is designed to run at full pipe-rated pressure, without a pressure de-rating factor applied to the fitting.
Where Type B Fittings Are Used
Because they carry the full pressure rating of the connected pipe, EN 10253-2 Type B fittings are widely specified in:
- Oil and gas transmission and process piping
- Petrochemical and refinery pressure systems
