EN 10253-2 vs ASME B16.9: Which Buttweld Fitting Standard Should You Specify?
In our last post, we introduced EN 10253-2 Type B buttweld fittings and how they differ from Type A. If you supply or specify piping components internationally, though, an even more basic question usually comes first: EN 10253-2 or ASME B16.9? Both are respected, widely used standards for factory-made buttweld fittings — but they aren't interchangeable, and knowing where they diverge matters before you place an order.
Two Standards, Two Regions of Origin
ASME B16.9 is the American standard for factory-made wrought steel buttwelding fittings — elbows, tees, reducers, caps — and is the standard most commonly specified across North America and in projects following US engineering practice.
EN 10253-2 is the corresponding European standard, covering buttwelding fittings in non-alloy and ferritic alloy steels, and is the standard typically specified across Europe and in projects following European or British engineering practice.
Both standards cover broadly the same fitting types, for broadly the same pressure-piping applications. The differences show up in the details.
Where the Two Standards Diverge
Dimensions. For most nominal sizes, EN 10253-2 and ASME B16.9 fittings are dimensionally close or identical. But at a few specific sizes, the outside diameters genuinely differ — for example, a DN65 / 2½" fitting measures 76.1mm OD under EN 10253-2 versus roughly 73mm under ASME B16.9, and a DN150 / 6" fitting measures 165mm under EN 10253-2 versus 168.3mm under ASME B16.9. These aren't rounding differences — they affect fit-up and flange compatibility.
Materials. ASME B16.9 fittings are specified against ASTM material grades (A234 WPB, A420 WPL6, and similar). EN 10253-2 fittings are specified against European steel grades (P235GH, P265GH, 16Mo3, 13CrMo4-5, and others), which carry their own chemical composition and mechanical property requirements under EN standards.
Pressure rating logic. ASME B16.9 fittings are generally supplied to match a schedule (Sch 40, Sch 80, etc.), matched directly to the connecting pipe's wall thickness. EN 10253-2 introduces the Type A / Type B distinction we covered in our last post — Type A fittings match pipe wall thickness with a calculated pressure factor below 100%, while Type B fittings thicken the body to guarantee full pipe-rated pressure. This is a genuinely different design philosophy, not just different paperwork.
How to Decide Which One to Specify
In practice, the choice usually isn't a free one — it's dictated by the project's governing piping code, the client's engineering standard, or the region the plant is being built in. A refinery project following ASME B31.3 will typically call for ASME B16.9 fittings; a plant following EN 13480 will typically call for EN 10253-2. What matters for procurement is making sure the fitting you order matches the standard actually referenced on the piping isometric or purchase specification — not assuming the two are freely substitutable because they look similar on a datasheet.
