Carbon Steel Buttweld Fittings (ASTM A234 WPB): The Workhorse Grade Explained

Carbon steel — ASTM A234 WPB — is the workhorse grade. It's used across the majority of standard piping systems where service conditions are moderate, and for good reason: it's the most economical option that still meets code requirements.
Best For
Moderate temperature and pressure, non-corrosive media. If your line isn't running continuously hot, and the media isn't corrosive or chemically aggressive, carbon steel is very likely the right call.Common Use
General industrial piping, utility lines, and standard process piping. This grade covers the bulk of piping systems in typical industrial and commercial installations. Why It's Specified
There's no reason to over-spec a line with stainless or alloy steel if the service conditions don't demand it. Carbon steel does the job at a fraction of the cost of higher alloy grades, which is why it remains the default choice for standard applications.Manufacturing Standard
Manufactured per ASME B16.9 / ASTM A234, with EN 10204 3.1/3.2 certification on every order.
Certifications We Support
IBR Approved, ASME U Stamp, PED Certified, AD-2000 Merkblatt, and ISO 9001:2015 / 14001:2015 / 45001:2018.
Choosing the Right Grade
Carbon steel is one of four material grade families we manufacture. The others — stainless and duplex steel, chrome moly, and nickel alloys — step in as service conditions become more demanding, whether that's corrosion resistance, high temperature, or extreme environments.Full grade specifications and standards are listed on our material grades page: Products
