Choosing a pipe fitting isn't just about geometry. Elbow, tee, reducer, cap, stub end — the shape is only half the specification. The material grade is the other half, and it's specified the moment corrosion resistance becomes non-negotiable.

Stainless and duplex steel step in exactly at that point — where carbon steel would degrade or contaminate the media, and the line itself needs to protect what's running through it.

Best For

Chemical processing, marine environments, and food & pharma lines. Any application where the process media is corrosive, or where contamination from the piping material itself isn't acceptable.

Duplex Advantage

Duplex grades offer higher strength plus superior resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking compared to standard austenitic stainless. This makes duplex the stronger choice specifically in chloride-heavy environments — marine, offshore, or brackish water service.

Why It's Specified

Carbon steel would degrade or contaminate the media over time in these environments. Stainless and duplex steel protect both the piping system and the product inside it, which matters most in applications like food and pharma lines where contamination isn't just a maintenance issue — it's a compliance one.

Choosing Between Standard Stainless and Duplex

Choose duplex over standard stainless when chloride exposure or higher mechanical strength is a factor. For general corrosion resistance without significant chloride exposure, standard austenitic stainless is typically sufficient.
